The 2025 Fornés New Play Dramaturgy Conference

A playwriting and theatre conference honoring the life, work, and legacy of María Irene Fornés | August 21-24, 2025, Atlanta

About the Conference

This past August, artists from across disciplines gathered in Atlanta for a four-day conference exploring the methodologies of María Irene Fornés and Working Title Playwrights (WTP). Through workshops, panels, and collaborative sessions, we created a dynamic space for learning, making, and connecting.

The conference offered hands-on training in the Fornés Playwriting Method and the WTP New Play Dramaturgy Method, grounded in movement, visualization, and community practice. Artists engaged in:

  • A Fornés 10-Minute Play Bake Off followed by a reflective process panel
  • Playwriting, directing, and dramaturgy workshops
  • A Self-Producing Panel featuring local Atlanta artists
  • WTP’s signature workshop: Build A New Planet

Together, we practiced new tools, shared stories, and reimagined what collaborative theatre-making can be.

We’re deeply grateful to all who participated and helped build this creative playground. The legacy of Fornés—and the spirit of curiosity she championed—was alive in every moment.

Who is María Irene Fornés?

Much like Fornés, I’ve spent the last 20 years doing this work myself! This do it yourself philosophy is one of the things I’ve brought to WTP and it didn’t start with me. We’re expanding on the work that Fornés started and we hope you’ll be a part of building that planet with us and beyond us.
